292 History292 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron was formed at the request of the Halifax School Board in March of 1943. The purpose of the squadron at the time was to train young men for direct entry into aircrew positions in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
During the war years most cadet units were attached to local school boards and the training was scheduled as part of the regular curriculum. The Halifax School Board had already sponsored one squadron in the city, that being 250 Squadron. They noted however that there was a group of young men who were not able to join that squadron for a variety of reasons. The school board approached Halifax Kiwanis and asked them to form an Air Cadet Squadron in the west end of the city to reach these young men who were not able to attend other cadet units. The Halifax Kiwanis accepted this challenge and in April of 1943 formed the 292 Halifax Kiwanis Squadron and appointed Squadron Leader Don Morrison as its first Commanding Officer. 292 Squadron has an illustrious wartime record, providing close to 300 trained aircrew members for the war effort. Following the war, the Air Cadet movement and 292 Squadron underwent major reconstruction. There was no longer a need to provide trained aircrew for the RCAF and therefore the Air Cadet League charged its squadrons with providing citizenship, leadership, and air-oriented training. We remained strongly associated with the local schools through the late sixties. Cadet training in some instances counted for partial credits in High School and with this affiliation many instructors and Officers came to us from the School system. |
